Amanda & Richard are from Seekonk, MA and have been engaged since October 25, 2007. Here is why Amanda thinks they should win the NBC10 Free Wedding Giveaway:
“Richard and I should win this free wedding because we have worked hard for our relationship and we deserve this amazing opportunity, we would be so grateful. When we first started dating it was against my parents’ will because he was almost three years older than me and I was just starting high school. Looking back on it I see where they were coming from but I am glad I didn’t listen to them. We began dating secretly in October but by November they had found out through a postcard I was going to send him while on vacation in Florida. I was obviously grounded and forbidden from seeing him. My sister had agreed after this to go along with continuing to try and hide the relationship so a few times she took us both out with her and her friends. When my parents got word of this we were both ordered to take the bus to and from school as punishment. Yet, somehow what I believe was fate continued to work in our favor. Richard took the same bus, and once again my parents found out, as they always did and I was further grounded, by now it was January and I was amazed Richard was still struggling through by my side. I knew at this moment he was the one, he had put up with so much from my overly opinionated, short tempered Italian father, including not so serious threats to his life.
Finally, my parents decided to try a different approach because he clearly wasn’t going away anytime soon. So, we all sat down together over dinner at my house and my parents said they would agree to let us be friends, but that’s all and that they would want to get to know Richard better. For once, we actually followed the rules hoping something would come of it, I only talked with him briefly in school and he was allowed to come over once a week for dinner, or to watch a movie. Over the next two months he was visiting more and more sometimes walking the two and a half mile trip to my house in the rain or snow. My parents slowly began to take a liking to him and we gained their trust back. So after weeks of begging on April 25, 2003 they allowed us to start dating again. It’s what we call our “second anniversary.“ I was so happy that day that I went to see him at work just to tell him. So, what my parents thought was “puppy love” and wouldn’t last, has. Today they love Richard and consider him a son already. He currently works as a computer technician and I am studying to be a teacher in my third year at Rhode Island College. Obviously paying for a wedding on one salary and with a student’s loans is nearly impossible. I have always dreamed of a fairytale wedding but lately, Richard and I have considered eloping. That was when I saw the commercial for the contest and once again believed fate was on our side. After all we’ve been through and how hard we’ve worked in this relationship this free wedding would be a dream come true. We can’t wait to start our lives together and this could be our chance.“
